The Journey of the Book

The journey of the book starts from when it’s
shipped from publishers located around the world. Books arrive at Shipping & Receiving at Robarts Library,
and then are sent to the Parcel Room on the 6th floor to be unpacked. They are then sorted into shelf ready and
not shelf ready. Books that are not shelf-ready require additional
processing. These books receive barcodes, property stamps,
and security strips. After being physically processed, they are
sent to the Cataloguing Department, where they are sorted by language. A member of the Cataloging Department is
able to recognize more than 30 languages. Books are then catalogued by either finding
or making a record to add to the library catalogue. After a book has been catalogued, it’s ready
to be put into boxes for shipping to its home library, or shelved at Robarts Library.
